History of Credit Cards

The history of credit cards and where the credit card originated is a hotly contested topic. Some say that the use of credit cards can be traced back to Europe in the 1890’s. Some others say that the first credit card was utilized in the United States in the 1920’s. In either case the credit card has become the preferred way to pay for products and services in the world today.

Credit itself is way of selling products and services when the buyer does not have the cash on hand. The credit card just allows this to happen in an automatic way. All of your personal information is held and tied to your credit card. Eliminating the merchant from having to take down and write all your personal information. The credit card offered a fantastic advantage for merchants. It meant less work for them.

Looking at the history of the credit card we find that they were first issued by individual companies. Companies such as hotels and big oil companies. The gas card help popularize credit cards in America.

Today, you can even buy gift credit cards to give as gifts. In the early history of credit cards they were not actually cards. They were often metal coins, credit tokens, paper, or even colloid.
Flatbush National Bank: Issued the first bank credit card in 1946. It is considered the first “Charge It” program between the banks customers and the local merchants.
